  • Confused on shooting with HVX200

So I have a pretty big question that may be hard to answer. I’m shooting on the HVX200 in 1080/24p. Whenever I watch the film in FCP, it doesnt seem to have that huge High Definition taste to it that I have seen other HVX videos have and is a little grainy. Is it because i should be filming in 1080/30 or 1080/60 to be getting the best quality? Maybe its just the monitor (non-hd)? Any ideas? Thanks

what’s that ‘hd taste’? Look is very subjective. It can mean lighting, composition, frame rate, etc. Many things go into it. But of course you need good monitoring.

[sdavis350] “and is a little grainy”

Grain is usually a product of under exposure, try some shots in daylight.

[sdavis350] “Maybe its just the monitor (non-hd)?”

This is huge, hd is a broader color gaumet and twice as much resolution. I think the panasonic BT-LH1700W LCD is still the best readily available solution but I haven’t been keeping up with what’s new. There are a number of posts in the fcp forum regarding hd monitoring alternatives.

Yeah, I totally agree with the other posts. It’s a whole list of things that bring that subjective “look.” Lighting and exposure are very important. The 200 has a smaller sweet spot than more expensive cameras. If you give it enough light, it can look pretty great. The gamma curve you select has a big influence. Detail setting. This camera has a lot of settings to tweak, so you really need to get familiar with all of them and find out what gets you the look you want. There are a couple of good books and DVDs on the basics.

And the monitor is very important too. The HVX200 won’t make your eyes light up until you see the results on a proper HD monitor. I use a Panasonic pro plasma that looks pretty good. It’s a good quality plasma for relatively little money. True, it scales all formats, but it does a good job with the progressive stuff.
