I’m having slight problem and am not sure what I am missing. I want to be able to drag a clip into my sequence and have the sequence conform to the clip settings so no rendering is needed. I went to user prefs>editing tab and made sure to have it ask me whether or not to do this when a clip is brought in. However, no pop up comes up and the clip shows that it needs rendering. Can someone please tell me what I’m missing? I have FCP 6 by the way. Thank you.

what format is the file you want to use?

Its possible the file is one that cannot be used in realtime and will need rendering regardless of the timeline setting.

With the first clip you pull into the time-line, FCP will offer to match the sequence settings. This will lock that sequence to those settings. Any subsequent addition that does not have the same specs will cause the render bar to appear.

Not true. Deleter ALL clips from the sequence and THEN drag a clip in and u’ll get the mess. again.
