Conforming on FCP
Trying to reload media back into FCP at a higher resolution. It keeps saying that due to timecode breaks it will have to keep the media offline and other things such as 50 items are being referenced outside the selection. Does anyone know what may be causing these kind of errors does it have something to do with subclips and how can it be fixed or worked around????

How was the original footage captured?
What kind of footage are you capturing now?
What kind of hardware?
Did you media manage the offline edit to an online edit?
How are you attempting this?
Please give much more info.

Thanks for responding Jeremy, that’s the problem we don’t have many details as this was handed off to us to conform and get ready for a grade and now it’s been nothing but problems. I believe it was an HD project to begin with and now we are conforming it. Most of the time it tries to take in a whole tape rather than just the clips it needs and that’s when we get the error message about it referencing stuff outside of the original clip – this is why i am thinking it has been sub-clipped, but I don’t know why that would create such a problem. Also the other worriesome thing is how after it captures certain clips it then says due to timecode breaks it will leave the media offline…
I know this isn’t much more info, but I’m not sure how to answer your questions because it was not originally our project to begin with and we have been given minimal details on it thinking it would be fairly straight forward. Any suggestions or ideas you’d like to throw out there would be great.

Well, if you capture footage in an offline way without giving yourself enough PRE-ROLL, then when FCP tries to recapture and it hits this wall of not enough preroll (5 seconds), then you might get this error.

Hey Leah. I understand you don’t have info about the origin of the project, but you have to know a bit about the tapes in your hand and what hardware YOU are using to do the online.
Can you please answer the questions that you do know? Here they are again for your convenience.
What kind of footage are you capturing now? (format/frame rate/etc)
What kind of hardware?
Did you media manage the offline edit to an online edit?

spose you get some grief about pricess leah, huh?
to conform a sequence in FCP ie to recapture select material used in a specific timeline from tape, one needs to use media manager in a specific way.
in a nut shell, it sounds like the project you have was Not media managed correctly. In this case, i would consider the project you have been given the Original/offline/unconformed version, and use media manager to make a new project with independent clips you can recap.

I would definitly keep an eye out for shots not lining up. Whenever you get the “TIme Code Break” message, you run a risk of having the code on some shots be off.

You should also find out if they captured across these timecode breaks. If they did, you may be really, really hosed. And I mean really hosed, because the timecode in FCP may no longer match the tape (or even seem to bear any obvious relation) after the break.

Hey thanks everyone,
You were all very helpful – we managed to get it sorted in the end by mainly having to eye-match a bunch of clips in. Not ideal, but got it sorted on time!!
At least now I have a better idea of what can go wrong and how to cope when doing a conform on FCP.
