Conform big project with only timecode
Hi guys. We have got a monster project in our lap. It´s a 90 minute documentary edited in FCP. The editor has managed to strip the reel names and the file names are all changed. Since the FCP edit is low res we have to conform the project to be able to grade and online it. The only thing left in the clips to help us match clips in the timeline with the source clips is timecode. What we´re trying to do is pointing at clips in the timeline to get alternatives with matching timecode. The problem is that the source material is so enormous that every little click takes minutes and minutes. And the alternative clips display from their start frame, not from the timecode where they start in the timeline, the part of the clip which is relevant. So you have to go through a list of maybe 50 possible choices for every clip in the timeline. And that process takes maybe 15 minutes per clip. And there are 550 clips in the timeline. We´re running out of time…Any tips? Fresh ideas? Every little tiny idea or suggestion would be much appreciated.

The only way to manage large projects, in my opinion, is to split them into ‘reels’, which is a longstanding tradition in longform color correction (at least here in US). I usually do 20 minute reels (legacy from when film print reels were 20 min), no problems with lagginess.
