Cross-posting from the RED forum, but it’s really a Quicktime/FCP issue at heart. Hope someone has an idea!

Some overcranked (slow-mo) material was shot with a 23.98 timebase / timecode, when it should have been 29.97 to go with the rest of the edit. We don’t want to add pulldown — just basically want to use the stuff at 29.97, edit in a 29.97 timeline, and still have the source 24p timecode to go back and online.

“Conform” in cinema tools seems to work — playback rate in QT Player is 29.97 and the original 24p timecode, but when I bring that conformed movie into FCP, it still repeats every 5th frame, as if it were a 23.98 movie being placed in a 29.97 timeline. Boo!

I just want every frame that was shot to appear as it was shot, only at 30p instead of 24p. The source material is larger than HD, so laying off to tape isn’t an option (and would probably wind up adding pulldown anyway).

Any thoughts from you smarties? I’m scratching my head here.

How did you make your proxies?

Do you mean the RED Quicktime Proxy files (_H, _M, etc.)? They’re generated automatically by the RED camera, but the framerate / timebase is embedded in the R3D file itself.

I haven’t transcoded it down to an offline Quicktime format yet.

No, I mean the (generally) Quicktime proxies you made to edit with, not the camera generated proxies. Don’t conform the camera files, they just reference the r3d.

You need to make edit proxy files. Log and transfer is one way, or RCX, or whatever. Basically, you create QTs from the r3ds, and after that is complete you will then conform those proxy files. Leave all the r3d media and subsequent proxies alone.
