We just inherited a couple of 3-year-old Avid Xpress Pro stations to work with Beta decks for a mass of licensed footage we’re going to be working with.

The former editor said there was no budget for updating the Windows sound cards, but that one had to disable the SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio card on the system BEFORE starting Avid Xpress Pro–otherwise it crashes.

Can anyone recommend better sound cards for Windows to work with Avid Xpress (5.6) on an HP Windows XP Pro workstation?

If you have to disable the sound cards, just go into BIOS and see if you can turn if off there. Once you do that they should be disable ad infinitum, or until you turn them back on.

Otherwise, checkout the SoundBlaster Audigy2 cards. They’re typically recommended for Avid systems and you should be able to find them pretty cheap.
