  • Conflict with trim operation – speed

Posted by Chad Simcox on May 13, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Quite often I get an error when trying to adjust the speed of a clip on the time line in FCP v6.0.3. Normally I can restart the program and will then be able to adjust the clip as needed.
Does anyone have a better work around for this? The reason I ask, is because this is not working for me right now. I have a whoosh sound effect that I need to speed up about 200%, but I keep getting “Unable to complete command. A conflict has occurred during the trim operation.” The clip is a .aiff file with a duration of 20 frames. I need it to be around 10.
Everyone I’ve asked on this gives me the same work around, just re-start Final Cut. There’s got to be another way to do this, right?
    Thanks.

Making Speed CHanges while the clip is in the cut doesn’t work…it will either expand the section you are trying to change (if you slow the clip down), or try to pull it closer together if you try to speed it up…and since you have other footage that would collide, then you get that error.

Press F to match back to the clip…it will appear in the Viewer with your IN and OUT points. Now, press APPLE-J to get access to the speed change window. Adjust the speed to what you want…then cut it back into your sequence.

I often adjust speeds and almost always get that message. What I do is drag the clip to the uppermost unused track (lowermost if audio) and use the keyboard shortcuts for “lock all audio clips” and “lock all video clips”. Then unlock only the track containing the clip and you should be able to execute a speed change.

i’ve found the best thing to have a seperate speed timeline in every project i do, any speed changes i copy over the clip i’m affecting, make me speed changes then paste back into master sequence. If i need to see the other cuts around it just paste over what you need, but 90% of the time i just do the one clip.

    Hope that helps!

Wow, thanks guys. I’m just getting into FCP as my every day editor at work and am having a “fun” time learning all the nuances of the program that I haven’t come across elsewhere when freelancing on FCP systems.

Shane’s method is the most elegant. And if you’re handy with Replace Edit (F11). That will overwrite it back in – provided you didn’t move the playhead. This will let you adjust clip speed without changing clip length (in a sense, though not really.)

If the clip doesn’t have to be a specific speed and you just want to fill in a gap then the “fit to fill” function is perfect for that. Sit and I/O in the viewer and an I/O in your timeline, hit shift+F11 and FCP will speed up/slow down the clip to fill in the gap in the timeline.

Thanks for your post. I’ve been having speed trimming issues a lot. Copying my clip into an alternate sequence, then making the speed changes worked for me. I then copied the adjusted clip back into the master sequence. Works great!
