There seems to be no mention in Final Cut X as to how to configure audio hardware, such as a multi-channel audio interface used for surround. Is this only done through the Mac OS? I am surprised when Final Cut 7 had specific preferences for configuring audio systems.

Agree – I’m interested in setting this up to be able to monitor 5.1. Does anyone have a good setup they want to share? What interface are people using?

I am using an Apogee Interface, but I can’t figure out how to assign it to Final Cut X.

    hi,

I´m new to this forum. I´m from Austria and no native speaker.
So please be patient. i´m on the german version of OS X. So I´ll give it a try.
Maybe I don´t use the correct english terms.

I´m using the RME Fireface. Working with the Apogee should be close.
In the system preferences open the sound-panel. select your apogee interface as your output and input device.
Then open the Audio-Midi utility programm. Select your apogee interface.
In the down-right corner there should be a “speaker configuration” button. Press the button then select “more channels”. change from stereo to 5.1 or whatever you need. Now you can route different channels to different speakers.
    does that make sense?

    Hope it helps.
    Greetings from Austria

Thank you, I suspected that the configuration took place in the Mac OS, not in the Final Cut’s own setup or preferences.

Typically you can configure the audio output in the application separately from the setup in the OS.

I wonder why they did this?

[Randall Packer] “I wonder why they did this?”

    I can only guess.
Since there are no audiotracks anyway, which one could assign to different outputs, it makes
sense to setup the audiorouting on systemlevel.

    greetings wolfger
