Concerns with 1080p?
Posted by Ron Humer on May 24, 2007 at 12:35 pmAre there any concerns that I should have working in 1080p vs. 1080i? I have a project that is HDCAM 1080p to be cut in FCP and delivered to 1080p MPG2 TS…. I just did a 1080i job that went smoothly… what adjustments do I have to make for 1080p?
Can you make a mpg2 dvd @ 1080p?
thanks,

other than smaller files not really ( and the format is PsF not p)
” have a project that is HDCAM 1080p to be cut in FCP and delivered to 1080p MPG2 TS…. I just did a 1080i job that went smoothly… what adjustments do I have to make for 1080p?”
are we talking HDV 1080i or HDcam 1080i? There is a big difference in handling the capture. IF you have not worked in HDcam before that may be an issue.
but there is not a specification for delivery of 1080 23.98 Psf as Mpeg Transport Stream, those old satellites in the sky all want interlace for delivery. Currently the only 1080 24sf delivery is on Blu Ray.

May 24, 2007 at 1:12 pmFirst off, thanks for your help.
-what is PsF and anything special I need to know about that?
-I am getting HDCAM tapes that supposedly would be shot in 1080p. I presume to just dig it uncompressed 8 bit and edit uncpress 8 bit and then compressor to mpg2 ts? Correct?
– I am still finding out whether they’re shooting 24 or 30….? What’s the big difference on my end for FCP?
-Been told that they want it on a dvd to be loaded into a in-store loop… project is only 3-5 minutes.
Appreciate your assistance with this.

do a search for the threads in this forum, the P2 forum and the kona forum. Sorry but I get tired of rewriting the same thing every week.
” I am still finding out whether they’re shooting 24 or 30.” if they are shooting at 29.97 it is most likely interlace.
“een told that they want it on a dvd to be loaded into a in-store loop… project is only 3-5 minutes.”
Not in HD, unless you have access to a Bluray or HDDVD burner.

May 24, 2007 at 7:49 pmChances are they want a data DVD-R disk with the TS file on it. That’s fine. I delivered something similar to Best Buy a while back.
Like Gary said, MPEG transport streams are always 1080i to my knowledge. So double check what they are using for playback. If it’s a DVHS deck, then it hast to be 1080i. But if it’s a Media Center PC or something like that, it might work fine with 1080p. There are so many consumer products that play back HD data files now. Apple TV, Xbox 360, etc. Find out what they are using. Or just deliver it both ways (1080i and 1080p) since it’s only 3-5 minutes burned to a $.25 blank disc.
But regardless of what you deliver, you want to capture and edit in 1080psf 23.98fps if that is what the source tape format is. No question about it. When you’re done editing, it’s no more difficult to output a 1080i MPEG from it if that’s what you need. Still much better to edit at the native framerate.
PsF means progressive segmented frames. It’s a way of storing a progressive image within an interlaced one so that it can be transimitted over HD-SDI. For all practical purposes, the same thing as regular progressive scan.

ALL Kona HD cards support the both P and PsF content, but you had better make darn sure you use the correct preset– you will be working in PsF NOT P.
True progressive content in 1080 can only be captured from the video out or Data out port on a cameras, NO 1080 camera records anything other than segmented frame to tape internally.
The only “True” progressive files are recorded to file based systems (s.Two or RaveHD) or to a properly configured SR or D5 Deck.
1080 content recorded in camera is always a progressive segmented frame.gary adcock

May 25, 2007 at 1:46 pmYou can capture 1080p with the Kona LH, but you can’t cross convert 720p to 1080p, or vise versa. For that you need the Kona 3
