Computer specs for Premiere Pro 2015
Recently transitioned from a freelance to full-time gig. As an editor, my freelance editing at home was done on my mac pro, which I have at home, and wanted to purchase an additional machine and recommended it for my work:
Mac Pro 5,1, (2010-2012)
Processor: 3.33GHZ. (12-core) 24-threaded
RAM: 64GB
Video Card: Nvidia GTX770
Hard Drive: 3TB internal storage
Cost: $2,500And my new employment is recommending to purchase this machine:
Dell 7910
Processor: Dual Xeon E5-2630, 2.4GHZ (x8)
RAM: 32GB, (4x8GB)
Video Card: AMD FirePro W5100 (4GB)
Hard Drive: 2 TB Serial ATA (7,200 rpm)
Cost: $4,100Any idea which machine is better? Faster? Better value? Pros? Cons?
I purchased and owned my mac-pro about 8 months ago, for the sake of editing 4k, and more robust video, now, and in future, and it is a screaming fast machine, and liked the “future upgradability” of the mac. However, everyone here at my work are on Dell PCs… Any thoughts?

Your comparing a “used” machine to a new machine, which is why the cost difference does not match the quality difference. Retrofitting a 5.1 Mac Pro will get you a better bang for the buck but without the ability to utilize Thunderbolt technology. Buying a new system that doesn’t have Thunderbolt is a waste of time and money. If you can add Tbolt to the Dell then it will be more cost effective once you buy a raid to edit with. Also remember that Windows Ppro systems will not allow you to export ProRes without going thru third party workarounds, if that effects your deliverables.

Well, in some cases, it is not a new machine, in that tech whom I bought it from, took out the original processor and put in a new OWC (I think) upgrade kit 12-core processor, added new RAM, and new upgrades, so yes, the casement in original, but the internal upgrades are new. So, it’s, in a sense, a new machine. Don’t need Thunderbolt at the moment.

I’m editing on eternal drives. So, internal storage isn’t going to fill up.

The OWC upgrade, which I have as well, is not a new part, it is salvaged from a used machine – intel hasn’t made those CPUs for a while, which again is why it’s so cheap. I’m not arguing against this, I have a system very similar to yours and other than Tbolt I’d put it up against a nMP any day.

If your working in a networked environment where the speed & cost advantages of Tbolt raids is not an issue then the refitted Mac Pro is a no brainer, as long as OSX is acceptable in your environment. If your going to buy a new computer I still maintain that it would be very short sighted not to have Tbolt.
