Computer (sometimes) does not detect camera as new hardware
I am capturing video from my SONY camcorder and have a lot of tapes. Sometimes, when I load a new tape and connnect the camera, the computer detects the camera as new hardware and I can capture video. Some other times however, it doesn’t. What is the proper way to connect and disconnect the camera so that the PC will detect the camera every time?

I would think that using the Remove Hardware Safely function, you would be able to properly manage how the computer sees the device. Usually it is found in the lower right-hand icon tray on your task bar. If not, a quick search should locate it.

I have tossed out several firewire cables for that reason. Also have 2 cams where the firewire port has quit. Lots of “things” can fail.

Thanks for your response. The camera I’m using is a brand new SONY PC1000. I bought it because the firewire port on my previous camera was not functioning (what a waste of money to have to buy a camera for this reason !! A repair would have been about $300). So I buy the new camera and have similar problems to the old one. With this one however, I have a docking bay to which I connect the firewiree cable. This way, if the socket goes bad, all I have to do is replace the docking station.

I am also facing similar problems. with win 20000 if i upgrade my service pack above one it doesnot detect my camera/deck. even windows xp service pack2 does not detect camera. i have to check removing service pack for the camera. mostly i am using with avid dv.
The docking station with sony camera has nothing inside to go wrong. i have opened it and found out. it just have connections. No chips or electronics.
