Computer Question
Posted by Jeff Bieber on March 15, 2012 at 1:30 pmI’m currently running Vegas 11 with the latest update and have been getting lots of freezes. I need help deciding if upgrading my current computer will help the situation.
All of my sessions are dual camera shoots that last about 15 min. The videos are shot on a Sony HXR-mc50 at AVCHD FX (24 Mbps) 1920 x 1080 / 50i / 16:9. It takes about 30 min to do quick two camera multicamera edits due to the constant freezing. This with previewing at the lowest quality.
Currently, I have a i5 661 @ 3.33Ghz, 3325 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 logical processors. 8 gig of ram. External Glyph raid HD connect via firewire. Nivida Geforce GT 440 video card.
Am I expecting too much out of a computer? Due to the backlog of videos I have to edit, I’d really like to stay away of having to use something like cineform if possible.

March 15, 2012 at 3:59 pmI am doing just fine with 4 tracks of AVCHD (24Mb/s) on an i7 960 @ 3.20GHz. When one of the tracks is nested and contains chroma key work, things start to slow down. I protect my computer from garbage build-up by having a second one that I can do whatever with.

March 15, 2012 at 4:28 pmThanks Jeff. That helps a lot. I was woried that I was going to have to move over to the MAC platform.
Do you know of any companys out there that build turnkey PC’s for video. I can’t seem to find a suggested computer configuration for Vegas anywhere. I have seen ADK.

March 15, 2012 at 4:51 pmWhat kind of MAC were you going to get? An i8 or an i9? Just kidding. You won’t get more performance out of a Mac because the hardware is the same. You will get “perceived stability” at the cost of much less options, both software and hardware.

March 15, 2012 at 5:11 pmYou should build it yourself! There are tons of videos on youtube, many posts in here about hardware lists and you could save hundreds of $$$’s.

March 15, 2012 at 7:30 pmWhen im building any of my editing PC, I never go overboard
with all the latest specs, processors, GPU, ###GHz, etc etc.
I keep things moderate and because of this i dont have
conflicts, instability or software issues.Steve Rhoden

March 15, 2012 at 7:52 pmThanks for the advice guys. The reason I asked about the turnkey system is becuase I have no clue about building a PC. What do you think about the videoguys specs for the DIY9 system.
This looks like a page that I could send to a PC builder and get a quote.
Sorry to be a pain. I bought my current turnkey computer less than a year ago and have had problems with it since. The place I bought it suggested that I go to proxy editing. I’m just trying to avoid that.

March 15, 2012 at 8:10 pmThe videoguys DIY9 is workable. I built that system with minor deviations just this past weekend. It NEEDS bIOS flash to latest upgrade.
I edited a very short clip last night with it. Just had to turn off GPU accelerator or whatever–guess my5770 card is not up to snuff.
I also built their DIY 6 or 7– several years back…it went much easier because there were no bugs to work out. This time took me all weekend. Parts can be had at New Egg and looking around sites like Digital Storm yes you can build it much cheaper and it is NOT that difficult.

March 15, 2012 at 9:31 pmThe original posters current computer rig has one glaring problem that should be addressed. The GT 440 is actually a hindrance. As the last few months have shown the CUDA implementation in Vegas is not entirely stable and it does not scale it’s workload efficiently. The GT 440 only has 96 CUDA cores. If you have GPU acceleration turned on much of the preview and rendering workload is being pushed through the GT 440. A mid level card (say the GTX 560) has between 350 and 450 CUDA cores. On a well built platform the CUDA would supplement computational workload. Here now in Vegas the GT 440 is overburdened and slows down the system and from what I have seen on this board causes instability.
I think (only a theory) that having a graphics card without CUDA in this case would be more stable and better overall than having one with limited CUDA resources.

March 16, 2012 at 2:34 amI haven’t heard of anyone building turn key systems for Vegas. There was an editing platform called Casablanca by Macrosystems, but has gone out of favour with a lot of editors. It has a niche following. The only contemporary consumer friendly NLE turnkey system I can think of is for Edius by Canopus Grass Valley, but you are looking at above $4,000 for a fully kitted out system.
My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6
