I’m using Pro-9, about to go to Pro-10. I’m also about to make a purchase decision, very likely to buy a Sony VAIO VPCF135SFX laptop, core i7-740QM, 6 GB DDR3, Nvidia GT-425M. My question concerns the hard drive. I can get it with either a 640GB 5400RPM or 500GB 7200RPM drive. Obviously the 7200 RPM is better for video, but one person I spoke with warned me about severe overheating issues with a 7200 RPM drive in a laptop. Can anyone comment on this? Comments the product in general are also welcome. Thanks.

I have a 7200RPM drive in my Lenovo W500 laptop and I have no overheating problems at all. You definitely want the 7200RPM.

Thanks John. Unless I’m mistaken the HDD is only spinning when saving or retrieving a file, so I don’t see why there would be a heat problem

Well… it can spin constantly or you can set it to spin down after no activity. So yes, it can spin down when not used for a while. Perhaps some laptops don’t have enough ventilation? If a laptop is designed for a 5400 and you put a 7200 that may cause a problem. Mine came with the 7200 RPM drive so it was designed for it.
