What version of After Effects? (Have you updated it? There are lots of bug fixes released between versions!)
What OS?You don’t have enough RAM to use multiprocessing, turn it off.
Turn off OpenGL for previewing or rendering.

Says you, but your computer is locking up. What are your memory and multiproccessing settings?

Don’t use OpenGL at all. What do you mean by poor quality? Can you post an example?
