  • Computer crashing when clicking RAM preview

Posted by David Larock on February 2, 2013 at 7:57 pm

    Hey everyone,

I just spend loads of money on a new computer and Creative Suite.

I just started using After Effects today and the whole computer freezes then restarts when I click RAM preview. It doesn’t happen all the time but enough to make me think there is a problem. (4-5 times within about an hour)

I have Nvidia GTX 670 and Intel i7 3770 CPU with 32gb Kingston Hyperbeast RAM

Quite upset that this is happening as I thought spending so much money would enable me to have a computer that works smooth without crashing. Not even my 2008 mac did that and it has a 256gb graphic card.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

    Thanks!

You might have faulty RAM. Try running Memtest.

Hi mate, thanks for the reply.

I ran memtest and it doesn’t give any errors. Is there something else that could be wrong?

    What version of After Effects?
    CS6

Have you installed the recent updates?
    Yes

    What operating system?
    Windows 7 Ultimate

    What kind(s) of source footage?
A after effects template that uses particular and knoll light factory, also froze when I was RAM previewing Video Copilot’s element.

What were you doing when the problem occurred?
    Just clicked RAM preview

    Has this ever worked before?
    Yes.

What other software are you running?
    None.

Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed?
Red giant trapcode, magic bullet and effects suite.
    Video copilot Element

Tell us about your computer hardware.
    Intel i7 3770
    Nvidia GTX670
2 drives, one SSD, running Windows and CS6 and normal drive for files

Do you have any third-party I/O hardware
    None

Are you using OpenGL features in After Effects?
    Yes. Adaptive resolution.

Does the problem only happen with your final output, RAM preview, or both?
    Freezes upon clicking RAM preview.

Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing?
Not sure, how do I check?

What is the exact sequence of steps that you are taking?
    Opening templates and RAM previewing.
Creating a new composition, adding a solid with element and extruded a mask and keyframing a camera with DOF and motion blur on. When I clicked RAM preview it froze. (Entire PC)

    Cheers for the suggestion Dave.

try checking for cs6 and nvidia driver updates. most everything else sounds pretty good.

if you have the klite codec pack installed, you would want to uninstall those.

    Hi Kevin,

Is it a known problem for the system to freeze if you have out of date drivers?

I’ve updated the driver and it hasn’t froze since.

Cheers for the help Kevin and Dave!

[David LaRock] “Is it a known problem for the system to freeze if you have out of date drivers?”

not that i’m aware of, but klf pro and element both use opengl, and i think cs6 is newer that the gtx670 so putting those together with a crash when starting a ram preview (particularly a system crash) and it seemed like their could be an opengl issue.

i’m glad it seems to have helped, hopefully it stays that way.

Ah I see. Well it turns out the problem is still there…

This time I didn’t click RAM preview, I was dragging a layer in a composition and it froze then restarted after about 3-4 minutes.

Could this be to do with OpenGL also because I was using adaptive resolution? And that uses OpenGL right?

    Cheers
