If I duplicate a Comp then make changes to the comp the original comp gets changed to. Can I not just duplicate a comp and make it say version 2 and make slight changes so I have two different versions? I know I can copy the layers and then put them in a new comp and that won’t effect this it just seems a bit strange the way it works.

There’s a difference between duplicating a composition in the Timeline panel and duplicating a composition in the Project panel.

If you do it in the Timeline panel (which I suspect you are), then you’re not really duplicaitng the composition; you’re duplicating the precomposition layer. The new layer and the old layer both point to the same source item—a single composition.
