Can anyone put their finger on why 2 very similar Macbook Pros should take such different length of times to process a 5D clip (from 30 to 25fps) with exactly the same settings. We’re talking 3 minutes vs 1 hour. Obviously, both Macs in proper working order etc etc
Does it make any difference whether the external drive used is mains powered or not to performance?

You say vary similar but you tell us nothing about the configuration and set up of each machine.

For each machine give us specific info.

    Proceesser speed
    Amount of ram
Is e media on the system drive or external
If external how is it connected
Is there a virtual cluster set up in qmaster
    What version os
    What version of compressor
What format video is the original video
What format are you compressing to

With more info mabie we can answer your question

    Hindsight is always 1080p

    Ok here goes –

    2.33 vs 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo
3 GB vs 4 GB RAM
External drives used in both cases via FW800 – although one not mains powered
What is a virtual cluster and how do I know if I have one?
    OS X 10.6.3 vs 10.6.2
    Compressor 3.5.2
    H.264
    Apple ProRes 422 HQ

Managed to narrow it down to putting Frame Control – On and beyond being where the time remaining becomes hours instead of minutes but the difference is plainly too much even allowing for the difference in specs.
