  • COMPRESSOR – XDCAM dimensions issue – stuck at 1440×1080

    Hi!

I’m working in a project filmed both in Canon 5D and Sony EX1. I decided, due to limitations in disk space and time, to keep the whole project in XDcam format, keeping the Sony EX3 files and converting the h264 from the 5D.

I noticed that the default XDCAM preset in Compressor is 1440×1080, even when I apply it to the 1920×1080 h264 videos. No big surprises there, so I just made a preset that kept the same dimensions as source.

Now the issue: in the inspector, compressor says the file will be 1920×1080, just as I’ve planed. (Or 1280×720, since some of the material was filmed on 7D at 60fps). But what happens is that the converted files are coming out at 1440×1080. Not distorted tho, their aspect ratio is also fixed.

Any idea on how to fix that? I’d really like to work with a 1920×1080 sequence, since the EX1 files have those dimensions, I feel silly working with 5D material at 1440×1080.

    Thanks

    XDCAM is often 1440×1080.
    XDCAM EX is often 1920×1080.
You may need to use the EX codec and create a custom setting.

Generally I’d use MediaInfo for investigating what going on in a file. Different player may interpret thing differently.
Download the Mac version with GUI.

I’ll check it. FCP itself is interpreting the files as 1440×1080, though!

There is no XDCAM EX preset in Compressor, I figured I should change the usual XDCAM preset to accommodate my needs, it’s the difference between what Compressor says the file will be and what the file is that is bugging me.

I’ll use MediaInfo, players and even FCP can be tricky indeed.

    Thanks!

[Pedro Saboya Burgos] “There is no XDCAM EX preset in Compressor, “

As stated, you’d have to make a custom setting.

[Pedro Saboya Burgos] “I’ll check it. FCP itself is interpreting the files as 1440×1080, though!”

It may be because that’s what it expects XDCAM HD to be. The pixel aspect ratio would then be interpreted and displayed at 1920×1080 but it may assume that the source is 1440×1080 as that is typical of that codec.

    You are right!
I changed the compression from XDCAM HD to XDCAM EX and that should fix it! I wasn’t considering what FCP or players would expect of that codec.

    Thanks
