Compressor turning 4×3 into sqeezed 16×9…?
Posted by Rosario Nitopi on January 29, 2008 at 5:24 pmHi,
So I have been having problems getting my footage exported with good quality. I seem to get the best definition when I export it as a quicktime movie (not self contained) and then put it into compressor to create a dvd or quicktime file…the problem is everytime I put the 4×3 footage into the compressor it stretches it into a 16×9 format. The settings seem to only allow me to change the extremity of the ratio but there is no option to make the file 4×3. If anyone can help out, I am trying to get this to someone in the next couple hours and would appreciate any tips. Thanks
Parker

January 29, 2008 at 5:56 pmI would say that, instead of exporting as a Quicktime and then going into Compressor, come straight out of your timeline as ‘Export…Using Compressor’. Avoid the Quicktime step.
In Compressor, choose ‘DVD:Best Quality 90 Minutes – 4:3’ (or 120 or 150 Minutes, depending on the length of you program). Then make sure in the Inspector that Aspect Ratio is set to 4:3.
This should take care of it.Mike Bugera

January 29, 2008 at 10:26 pmthink it is bad advice saying just come out straight from final cut pro to compressor (you are right about no improvement to quality it is just the sequence as is rendered in final cut pro) however I think it very very important to say that compressor will work a lot faster when it is reading from any type of quicktime reference movie instead of when it is coming out of final cut pro and tying up final cut pro in the process.
good tip if using the reference movie (e.g. not self contained) quicktime movie (not quicktime conversion bad bad) is to maybe make a duplicate of project if you plan to make changes as renders on reference movies can get screwed with new renders from same sequence and project. it is also worth noting that the renders should work faster of a reference movie as it references multiple files and so could potentially be rendered with more cores from qmaster setup (not sure but it makes sense).
also last tip for speeding up renders, always render to a different harddrive than that which has the original capture scratch and media files, this should really improve renders as it reads off one drive and then writes to another
to get the clip to come out 4.3 select clip with mpeg preset, then double click preset and then in inspector go to second tab, then in video format go down to the aspect ratio box and click the wheel to get the drop down on aspect ratio to work, then change to the format you need. this probably wouldnt come up if you sent straight from final cut pro but then you may be waiting a lot longer and this takes 2 seconds and should be checked. To test it is reading 4.3 click the preview window whilst clip in compressor selected and then check it is looking ok

January 30, 2008 at 5:22 pmA Final Cut Pro Reference Movie is still going to need to refer to Final Cut and, therefore, tie up the program. If you’re concerned about tying up Final Cut, make a self-contained Final Cut Pro Movie and put that into Compressor. That way Compressor is ONLY looking at the self-contained Final Cut Pro movie.
But since your concern is 4:3 being turned into 16:9 in Compressor, the simple answer is to: 1. Make sure the codec you choose is one that ends in 4:3 (i.e., DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes – 4:3) and; 2. Make sure that the Aspect Ratio in the Video Format tab (in Inspector) is set to 4:3.
And again, as I do on every project without conflict, I recommend coming straight out of Final Cut into Compressor.
That’s my good advice.Good luck,
