Compressor transcoding times.
I have a bunch of h264 files shot on a DLSR that I need to edit in FCPX. I understand I need to change them to Proress 422. It’s around 25gb worth. I’ve got them transcoding in compressor (4.0.7), and have dropped the apple prores 422 setting on them.
Compressor is estimating this will take over 9 hours.
The files are being stored on an internal hard drive in a Mac Pro 4,1
Can this really be how long it takes? Is there anything that can be suggested to transcode these files faster??

#1 – FCX will do the transcode internally, and that really is the best way to go. It will import the footage, and you can work with it natively, while you let FCX “optimize the media,” meaning convert it to ProRes.
#2 – it might take that long, depending on how much footage you have. You didn’t mention the amount of time this footage is. 25GB…how many hours of footage is that?

I’m betting its about 5-6 hours of source, which is why Compressor is quoting about 9 hours to do the conversion.

Wait until Compressor stops…and the new files are now 300GB. Don’t freak out about the new size…that’s normal.
