  • Compressor – getting proper aspect ratio with generated 1080i HDV files in QT

    Hey all –

here’s the challenge – I’m helping some folks batch convert a ton of files to a variety of formats in Compressor 3.0.1, including HDV. The HDV files play back and work properly in Final Cut, but viewing them in QT Player the aspect ratio is wrong. It is entirely possible to fix the aspect ratio manually with command-J, click on video track, click on Visual Settings, uncheck Preserve Aspect Ratio, and change 1440 to 1920.

    That works.

HOWEVER, with hundreds of files I’d love to have a more batch-able way to do this. Digging around in Compressor 3.0.1 Inspector, I couldn’t find a way to do this, even though the preset already has an aspect ratio selection for HDV 1080i – it doesn’t affect viewing in QT.

I dug around in Automator a bit, but it doesn’t appear to have hooks to fix this particular issue.

I’d love it if there were a droplet I could find/buy/make to fix this, but I haven’t found it.

Anybody have any suggestion on how to change the playback aspect ratio in bulk for a ton of files?

    Hi,

I don’t know whether it’s gonna work for you, but have you tried to change the aspect ratio in the FCP sequence and then “export using compressor”?

As Khan would say, “This IS Seti Alpha Six!”

    : )

This IS coming from a Compressor setting – the 1080i60 HDV preset that is creating the problem. Smells to me like Apple needs to make a tweak to the presets to make them display correctly if the aspect ratio was set correctly in Compressor.

And all of this is coming from FCP, so that isn’t a help.

But I DO appreciate you taking the time to respond – we’re both suggesting what SHOULD work, it just isn’t.

    Mike,
Open the preset you are using in the Inspector. Look for the window: GEOMETRY.
    Select “Constrain aspect ratio: 16×9”.
    Think tha’s all.

Rafalaos – that was in version 2.3, not in version 3.0.1 – the described process above should generate the desired results, but it doesn’t.

Sorry Mike. Right. I’m still in the 2.3
