  • Compressor error: Unable to connect to background process

Posted by Bram Vergeer on December 1, 2008 at 3:37 pm

I installed the FCP Studio 2.0 on my new Imac (20inch, 2.4Ghz, 4Gb ram, 320Gb HD). With the same studio no problems on my old Macbook but now Compressor is acting up with the “Unable to connect to background process” message when I want to submit a batch. Some googling learns that it happens more often but none of the solutions offered, like re-installing (https://support.apple.com/kb/TA47672?viewlocale=en_US), helped for me.

Can anyone help me out here??
    Thanx!

Had you repaired permissions and ran DiskWarrior or any similar application?

    Bram,
It really shocks me that you are working with a Mac and you don’t know to do that.
If you want to have a happy relation with your Mac you need to learn to make a basic maintenance of your system and your HDs. Repairing permissions is the most basic maintenance operation. You must do it every time you install some thing.
Open the Disk Utility and click your System disk. You will see the “Repair Permissions” button.
You should learn some other routines to keep your Mac fit, like letting the computer open some times at night, so the machine can do some maintenance by her self too.
Another important operation is to rebuild the HDs directories, starting by the System disk that is the most important. You can do that with Diskwarrior, TechTools or similar.
    Cheers,

    Thanks Chris & Rafael,

I reinstalled compressor and qmaster again and repaired file permissions. I checked for updates and instelled the compressor and qmaster updates, but when restarting and checking againg it again comes up with the same qmaster update. It doesn’t seem to properly install it….

    The compressor repair says:
    checking file permissions…
/usr/local/lib/libhelium_mac.a does not exist. You are advised to reinstall compressor/qmaster

But I already re-instelled everything like 4 times this week….

    Any suggestions??

    Thanx!

    Hi Bram,
Before re-installing Compressor is necessary to make a good de-installing.
There are at least 6 threads from the last 4 weeks about this issue in this forum.
Type “uninstall compressor” in the search window.
Then have a look to this:

I have spoken with Apple directly. I have purchased a new Macbook Pro with Intel and it runs Leopard. What I have been told is this OS will not support Compressor 2 and that I need to upgrade to Final Cut 2009. The challenge is that if I upgrade to FCP 2009 my file projects from FCP 5 will be incompatible with my G5 tower (3 years old). What I am doing is logging & capturing to my Macbook as all of the rest of my FCP 5 Suite works in the Macbook. I then just move the external drive to edit to the G5 where Compressor works. Based on the different OS and the Intel based Macbook Pro, I am going to ask the forum today if this is OK to do without concern for file corruption.
