  • Compressor causes my computer to power down

Posted by Joshua Sandler on May 19, 2010 at 6:53 pm

Hey everyone i am having a pretty serious problem that i have never run into in my many years of dealing with Compressor. Every time i start an export using Compressor, about 5 minutes into the export my computer just shuts down. I have tried exporting a few different types of files and every time the computer just turns off. I am exporting a SD FCP Quicktime file that is only about 7 minutes long. I am on a first generation Macbook Pro running Mac OS X 10.4.11, 2.16 GHz intel core duo and 2 Gigs of ram. I am running Final Cut 6, Compressor version 3.05. Can anyone shed any light on what might be going on and how i might be able to remedy this situation. Would be a huge help.

    thanks

    Hi joshua,

go to support.apple.com Compressor troubleshooting basics

apart from that, you need more ram

You could have a power supply problem that needs to be fixed. Compressor can max out you processors, which consumes much power..which then triggers the shutdown. Normal apps…even FCP don’t
    might not cause it.

Hey thanks a lot. Through the research i have done it looks like the power supply might be the problem. For years i have been using Compressor without any problems. There have been a few times in the last months that it has shut down like this while doing heavy rendering from After Effects, but just once in a while. In the past 2 days every time i try to do an export from Compressor the computer powers down. Could this mean that my power adapter is fried and not delivering enough power to the computer, or is it possible that the problem is internal?

    What’s your ‘power adaptor’?

What’s the vintage of your computer?

I’d take it into your local Mac repair shop and have the power supply checked out.

If there is something wrong with it, you should take it as a blessing that its shutting down rather than frying the motherboard or something.
