  • Compressor can’t find background process

Posted by Björn Obenius on January 31, 2006 at 2:28 pm

    Hi!
When I try to export a self-contained QT-film from FCP 4.5, using QT conversion, I get this message when I click on “Submit” in Compressor:
    Cant’t find background process.

This happened after I had reinstalled FCP 4 and upgraded to 4.5. I tried upgrading Compressor to 1.2, but with the same result.
    What have I missed?

    Regards, Bj

    Hi Bjorn,
i had this prob and a quick search on the net revealed it seems to be a commen one. I used the following fix and it worked, but be very careful what you are doing. I would print this out before trying

    best wishes
    Nick

WARNING: Only advanced users should attempt this. If you attempt this hack, you must be prepared to undo it!!! (see below for undo options)
Click on the Finder icon in your Dock
Select “Go to folder” from the Go menu. (Go > Go to Folder)
Type “/etc/” (without the quotes) and press return
Find the “hostconfig” file and COMMAND drag a copy to your desktop. (COMMAND v. Important. THis bypasses asking for permission)
    Rename the file to “hostconfig.old”
Drag the “hostconfig.old” file back into the etc folder. You may be prompted for an admin username and password.
    Restart your computer
Open Compressor and submit a batch.
Hopefully Compressor should work fine now.

If your computer restarts in Command Line Mode, you can rename the “hostconfig.old” file back to “hostconfig” from the Command Line if you don’t have a Journaled hard drive.

    Just do the following:
    1) type “cd /etc” at the prompt (without the quotes)
    2) press enter
    3) then type “sudo mv hostconfig.old hostconfig”
    4) press enter
    5) provide your admin password if asked
    6) type “reboot” and your done
The other undo option is to connect a second computer to the problem machine with a Firewire cable. Restart the problem machine and hold down the “T” key to boot it in Target Mode. The problem machine will mount as an external hard drive. Rename the “hostconfig” file and restart.

Good luck! Maybe someday Apple will add this information to their support site.

Someone said to install Apple QMaster. I have 10.3.9 installed in my mirrored G4 2x1GHz. Does QMaster work in that config?

    Hi!
I tried once again upgrading to 1.2 AND IT WORKED 🙂 Now Compressor is working again and with good result. Last night my G4 finalized a two hour programme with a school cabaret that I documented.
Just thought you wanted to know the result.
    Regards
