Compressor 3.5.3 stating wrong native field dominance for DVCPro HD 1080i60 clips
Here’s a weird issue we encountered today…
I needed to convert DVCPro HD 1080i60 clips to ProRes 422 1920×1080. When I first attempted a conversion of a test clip prior to running the full batch, I found that the clip was having some difficulty playing back correctly in a ProRes 422 1920×1080 sequence in FCP — it was getting the green realtime playback bar, but when I rendered the clip, it appeared the fields were shifted on playback.
I checked my interlace settings in the ProRes 422 compressor setting, and they were correctly set for Upper Field First. But still the resulting clip still was not playing back smoothly.
Final Cut Pro identified the clips as having a field dominance of Upper Field First in the browser. However, when I checked the clip via Compressor 3.5.3’s A/V Attributes Inspector panel, it incorrectly reported that the Native Field Dominance for each of those same clips were Bottom First!
Then I manually changed the Native Field Dominance in Compressor to what I thought it should be for HD– Top First. I added my ProRes422 setting and tried it again in FCP. The resulting clip played back perfectly!
So, despite having to manually change each individual clip’s Native Field Dominance setting in Compressor prior to applying my ProRes setting and running the batch, ultimately the clips all played back correctly in FCP.
