    Hi guys,

I just came across this requirement from a digital delivery service for TVCs. They ask for an IMX30 to be uploaded on to their cloud, which then gets recompressed/transcoded to different file formats such as DVCPro50, DV25, IMX50, etc, and sometimes even get dubbed onto a BetacamSP tape.

Now I’ve started to question this process as I’ve always believed that starting from the best source, such as an uncompressed file, is always better than starting with a lossy codec such as IMX30. Terms such as compounded compression, digital generation loss, and such, come to mind.

Here’s a link to the complete article:

Am I right in thinking this article is more of a marketing move rather than an attempt to be technicality accurate and transparent? Would appreciate inputs. Thanks

You are certainly right that an uncompressed delivery would make a cleaner source for transcodes.

However, the ideal format is the one in the delivery spec.

Having written many delivery specs myself, I’ll mention that after a certain point of “good enough,” workflow, automation and playback realities trump theoretically better (but often perceptually invisible) visual quality improvements.

Thank you for the reply Walter. You are correct, IMX30 is an ideal delivery format.

Personally, do you think IMX30 is a “good enough” codec to work with for lossy recompression? If not, what would be your bare minimum?
