    Little background first.

I’m a PC guy, Sony Vegas Pro 8.0.

I record on a Canon HV20 in both HD and DV but primarily DV. I always encode in wmv format. This is mandatory. I typically encode 720x480x1.5Mbps and the video is fine. Just fine. Nothing special. Comes out to about 10MB per minute which I’m fine with.

However, I want the videos to really pop. I want them as close to perfect as possible….within reason. I’ve tried numerous wmv encoding settings within Vegas. The increase in quality versus the file size increase when encoding at say 3Mbps bit rate is not really worth it. No noticeable increase in quality. Just a bigger file size.

So, then I was thinking I would encode it in avi and use some sort of compression sw to manipulate it into a higher quality wmv file than i can get straight out of Vegas. I tested out Sorenson Squeeze but the system crashes when you try to import avi format vids. I sent a support ticket to Sorenson. They admitted there is some sort of issue with some third-party codec and that they’re working on a patch for that now. Unfortunately, I need videos that pop now and not later.

So, anyone have any experience here? Any thoughts? I don’t want to say price is no object cuz price is always an object but I’m willing to spend up to a grand for a compression software that will satisfy my needs. I’ve seen other WMV vids where they’re encoded at around 10Mbps bit rate and the file size is about 20 MB per minute. This is impossible in Vegas. So, I’m thinking whomever did the videos I’m admiring used some sort of compression technology.

    Whaddaya say guys?

Try this, Download Gspot from here.
    https://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html
It’s not an install program, just launch gspot and drag one of the WMV files that look great but are 20 meg per minute. This program will tell you everything about the file.
Then you can try Windows media encoder. It’s free here.
    https://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx
You can possibly customize Vegas render parameters to match what gspot says about the smaller files or see if Windows media encoder will do the trick. Hope this helps. Danny Hays

Also as far as Squeeze goes, what kind of AVI are you trying to bring into Squeeze? I render to DV-AVI and I have no problems at all with AVI’s in Squeeze 4.5 Power Pack.
