  • Compression Settings for Feature Length DV from FCP to QT?

Posted by Jake Wheeler on January 24, 2007 at 8:36 pm

what compression settings should I use to get a 23.97 project approx 126 mins from FCP 5 into a quicktime that will fit on a conventional dvd but with good quality. the usual trade off I’m seeing is quality vs file size.

has to be a qt forman not mpeg2 dvd

If I compress using DV NTSC settings the file is approx 15gb. compressed as mpeg4 or jpeg QT really compromises quality

there are so many setting permutations that I have burned a day and a half playing with them. can someone help?

    thx

    Use H.264.

Beyond that you’ll have to experiment. Pick out some good “average” settings for it and see what you get. Then adjust upwards or downwards. I’d start by setting the frame size to 480 x 360. That’s a pretty good compromise in the size vs. quality balance. If you find that comes in very small you can up it to 640×480, but see what you get first.

Also, be sure to use Compressor and not Final Cut or Quick Time to do this. You can set up a dozen slightly different settings and just let it work overnight.

Much more productive than trying them one at a time all day.

I’ll give it a shot – thanks much!

In Video Settings you have an option under Data Rate to Restrict to…
in kbits/second. Do the math. How many seconds in your video? How much can you fit on a DVD?
How many kbs do you need to fit that? Simple math, but you may be slightly off, so go a little lower than
your math suggests. AJA has a data rate calculator to make it even simpler:
