Compression question…
Ive used Windows-Movie-Breaker-2 for many years, but went over to Vegas-5 last year and am mightily impressed by its stability.
However, when rendering family movies, I always use the default WMV option (in Standard Template). Is this the best option tho? Or is there another option that
would provide as good a quality movie, combined with a smaller file size, while being in a format that most of my relatives and friends will be able to play on their computers?Thanks for any input

If they are on PCs (not MACs) and the PCs are relatively new, WMV is probably the better option. There are other good encoders out there too, such as DivX etc, but if family movies for PC distribution is what you want, you are fine.
I got a DVD burner for this purpose, since movies mostly look better on a TV set than on a PC.

Someone also gave me a tip, which was useful in reducing
my 59mb wmv file to just 21mb, with little drop in quality.What the suggested was: Select Render, WMV option, then click on Custom, Video Tab, then select the VBR option, and also reduce the Average Bit Rate if need be. (I reduced mine to 700 K )
Im very happy with the end result. Trouble is, it now takes almost twice as long to render a 4 minute video in Vegas-5.
It would take me around 20 mins, now its 45 mins since the changes I made (as above).Any ideas why this might be, anyone?

You’re rendering from the WMV??? Stick with the ORIGINAL file for additional rendering. The WMV should be treated as a DESTINATION format – not an editing format.
