  • Compression problems, Does anyone know?

I am trying to make a courtesy DVD for 2 30 minute studio shows. I’ve digitized them into FCP, made a few edits and exported them to compressor. A process I’ve been doing for the past year or so with no problem. I recently upgraded to FCP Studio.

The settings that have worked in the past (MPEG2 60 min high quality preset- 2 pass VBR) are no longer producing acceptable results. The studio footage looks great, it’s talking heads with very little movement, but the b-roll that was used during the show is toatlly unacceptable. There is digital noise at every movement. I’ve tried changing the average bitrate and the GOP. I finally realized that I could do a decent CBR compression and that worked.

What I want to know is, what am I doing wrong with the VBR settings? I guess CBR is good soultion for 60 minutes or less, but I’d like to figure this out before I need to endcode something longer.

Stop using compressor is the best solution, move to Mainconcept, you will have much better quality in terms of MPEG2.

It’s not you, It’s Compressor 2 (rhyme unintentional). 2-Pass seems to be broken, but CBR still works fine. And with only 1 hour of video on your disk, that shouldn’t be an issue for this particular project.

If you regularly need to do DVD projects with more than 90 minutes of video, you might want to invest in a 3rd party encoder. I bought MegaPeg HD, & haven’t looked back. Now I only use compressor when there’s 90 minutes of footage or less in a project.

Arnie is correct. No need to use another encoder. Just go with CBR.

Does Apple read this board? Isn’t it time this was fixed?

[Chris Babbitt] “Does Apple read this board?”

Probably not. Your best bet is to send them feedback on the apple website:

I don’t think they read that either, at least not pertaining to this issue.

Is MainConcept the encoder used in Sorenson Squeeze?
