  • Compression (Formatting) – Transferring files

I have a 5GB mov created in FCE that I need to move from my MBP to a PC. This file refuses to copy to a flash drive. i’ve been told it’s too large. How can I format (compress?) this file for transfer and it still look good being shown over SD projectors?

Try compressing to .h264. It will look reasonably well and be a much smaller file. But do check on the PC to make sure that the file can play in realtime.

    Good Luck,

I think you may be using the wrong codec/setting when compressing. You’ll want to make an H.264 QuickTime in Compressor. First, export a non self-contained reference movie from Final Cut. Take this file into compressor and do the following:

Apply the H.264 preset (Settings>Formats>QuickTime>H264 QuickTime) to your file. Select your file with newly applied preset and click the Inspector. Change the settings to these:

Click the Encoder Icon: Video: Settings:
    Frame rate 30
Data rate: Restrict to: 1000 kbps
(Drop this data rate if you want your file to be smaller, but you will sacrifice quality.)
    Make it Two Pass

Audio: Settings: Target Bit Rate: 192 kbps

    Click the Geometry Icon:
    Dimensions:
    Frame size: 640×480 (or 854×480 if 16:9)
    Pixel aspect: Square

Just need to make sure the PC has QuickTime installed and you are good to go

    Good luck.

    Richard,

thanks for the suggestion. the file is much smaller now and still looks great for what I need. Thanks for helping out a newbie.
