Compression for Cartoon DVD
Posted by Trent Diggity on October 6, 2009 at 8:01 pmI’ve just finished up work on a 4 minute cartoon that was completed in Flash/After Effects. I’m running into problems when compressing it to dvd. I’ve tried using dvdstudiopro and allowing it to handle the compression and the results are pretty bad. I then swapped to compressor and they have improved but still arnt anywhere near the quality of a dvd one would purchase over the counter. Anyone have an idea on how I can improve my image quality? there are alot of flat colors and after compression they end up with artifacts.
Thanks.

October 6, 2009 at 9:02 pmTry changing the settings.
Seriously, if you can’t tell us what you have already tried in terms of encoding settings, how are we going to be able to give any useful advice?

October 7, 2009 at 3:23 amSo far I’ve tried
DVDStudio Pro’s compression, I dont think settings can be altered on this but I could be wrong
Adobe Encore – same deal. After getting bad results I took my movie into compressor.
From here I tried these two defaults
120 Min DVD Best Quality 2 passes
90 Min DVD Best Quality 2 passeswhen that failed to give desired results, I upped the mb/sec to 7.7

October 7, 2009 at 8:36 amYou can change the settings in DVD SP – check the preferences.
Please tell us about your source content:
What’s the frame size and frame rate?
What format/Codec did you use to export it from AfterEffects?

October 7, 2009 at 5:12 pmSource content is 30fps, 720×486. Animation compression out of after effects. I’ve viewed it on a professional monitor and scope, It looks perfect before going down to mpeg2. In the encoder section of compressor, I’ve pushed the quality as high as it will go – 7.7mbs.

It looks like you made one very common error, you’ve rendered out a square pixel project to a non-aquare pixel frame size and this will be degrading the picture quality some what. You should have rendered out at 640×480 Square pixel
Additionally, are you using CBR or VBR, 1 pass or 2 pass in compressor?

October 7, 2009 at 6:16 pmI’ve had some personal bad experience with Animation codec files as source. Sometimes exporting out of After Effects in 8 bit Uncompressed will hold up better going to MPEG-2. I can’t say that’s the issue with a certitude but it’s another think to try in addition to Daniel’s observation.

October 7, 2009 at 6:39 pmI’m using VBR. I’ll give the square 640×480 a try now. I’ll let you know the results.

October 7, 2009 at 7:17 pmI’d also try CBR while you’re at it.

October 9, 2009 at 6:24 pmSo I tried going to the 640×480 square pixel. it actually made the problem a bit worse.
I haven’t found where I can change to CBR, wheres that located? -
