Compressing Sony Z1 HDV footage in FCP for DVDSP?
Just bought and installed Final Cut Pro 5 Suite, used to have 4.5HD, but bought latest version so I can edit Sony Z1 HDV footage.
Just imported and edited a sequence, but I want to know the best way to MPEG-2 encode it ready for DVDSP4. I used to use BitVice, but this is not HDV compatible. I never used Compressor as I only ever got bad results from it, though this was 16 months ago when it was twitchy. Never used QuickTime either.
BitVice gave me razer sharp images and was totally unbeatable. However, now I am swimming in HDV waters I need a new method of MPEG-2 compression.

There are settings in Compressor 2 to do this, but it’s going to be terribly slow. This will be a bit faster if you use 1-pass CBR instead of the default (2-pass VBR), but HDV decoding is happiest on a dual 2.7. You might try a 2-step approach. Export an FCP movie (not self-contained) and use Compressor 2 to generate an 8-bit SD uncompressed QT. Then use BitVice as you normally would. Might be best, since BitVice is slow to begin with and everything generally works faster when you are using uncompressed media.

I don’t mind how slow it is, I can leave it doing whilst I’m away at the weekend. I have a dual 2 Ghz G5 and it’s only a 15 minute programme, if it takes 48 hours, fine. I want the very best quality I can get, so is Compressor still the way to go?

Sorry, but I haven’t done any testing between Compressor 2 and BitVice with HDV-originated footage to tell you. Try a short test between the two yourself and see what you think.
