compressing SD pal footage to HDV help
Hello,
I’m trying to uprez a large quantity of SD pal footage to match the majority of footage I have which is HDV 1080p24. My tests have came out satisfactory using compressor and frame controls. However, I have about 33 gigs to convert and when I try to batch compress, it estimates the time needed to about 1100 hours. I am on a 2 x 2.66 dual core intel xeon w/ 5 gb of 667 ddr ram.Does this sound right? If so, what is the best method to go forward. Just offline edit w/ the pal footage and batch compress once the sequence is complete?

Tell us how many hours you have to compress rather than the total size 33GB in one format could be 1000 x longer than in another format.
Could you also tell us what CODEC the source material is?

It is DV pal. I have 30 clips total that add up to about 3 hours of footage.

Much of the estimated time given by compressor will be taken up by the upscaling of the SD footage and that time will vary considerably depending on what quality settings you have chosen for the upscaling.
My suggestion is to take a short sample – say 10 minutes, and run it through the process at those settings while timing it. Simple maths will tell you how long the whole lot will take.
