  • Compressing PPro footage on a Mac

I use PPro on a PC, but one of our contractors uses a Mac. He prefers FCP. He has been encoding in Adobe Media Encoder. He has a preset that we use for a certain client to get the quality and settings that they require. All has been fine until the latest job.

Now his output looks muddy. Very obvious to a casual observer. I had him crank the settings up:

    H.264, MP4
    1080p
    29.97 fps
    profile HIGH
    level 5.1
    Render at maximum depth
    VBR, 2 pass
    Target bitrate (Mbps) 6
    Maximum bitrate (Mbps) 10
    Maximum render quality
    Frame Blending is OFF
    Use Previews is OFF

It doubled the file size, but still muddy. He used Apple Compressor and it was fine. See here for a comparison of the two.

What are we doing wrong? There was an update a week ago. This had been working fine — has anyone else seen this issue?

    Thanks!

Is it possible that he created this particular project at a lower resolution (like 854×480, or 640×360) and that AMC is consequently up-rezing the footage?

I might have him export a section of the video with an uncompressed-image codec, like animation, at 1080p. This would help verify that the problem is actually in the codec/compression side of things.

It was 1080p at every stage (video, AE, 3DS, timeline, etc.).
