I fear this is probably an oft-asked question, but I couldn’t find any previous posts, excuse me if it’s repetitive!

Someone wants to give me a DVD of his band (40 minutes), already FCP-edited — he just wants me to compress it so it’s small enough to put on a CD.

I’m not sure the best way to do this. Any suggestions?

I have FCP (no Compressor), Cleaner, QT Pro, Toast….

    Thanks!

    if it were me,

i’d capture the dvd into final cut pro

trim the heads and tails so its nice and neat

and then use quicktime pro or squeeze or equivalent to compress it down to web size, then use toast to put on a cd.

you can easily jack your dvd player through your firewire deck, and capture that way….just make sure yo change fcp to non-controlable device.

    Thanks Ben, helpful points.

Thax, he wants me to make a master CD that he will mass-duplicate and give to people to watch on their computer. CD type = just your standard inkjet printable CD-R 700MB CD.

    Just a question…
Why bump the DVD down to a CD with the associated loss of quality for distribution? Why not just duplicate the DVD? Not that much difference in ptice these days and it will look a whole lot better.

    Hey Ben, novice question —

    here’s what I did:
-used Streamclip to get DVD footage onto computer
-used Cleaner to make file websize
-attempted to use toast to burn 75MB video onto a standard CD-R

The CD burned, but I didn’t see any video files, just data files. Just dawned on me, can I not burn this on a plain Cd-R? Do I need to burn onto a VCD or SVCD?

I see there are 3 options in toast to choose from:
    VCD
    Super VCD
    DVD-Video

If I can burn onto a regular CD-R, which do I choose?

I agree Tom, I tried to convince him to go the DVD route and explained the loss of quality. He’s stuck on CDs. Said something about people he’d be sending it to not having DVD playing capabilities.

well, use that file you captured, not the compressed to all hell one, and bring that into TOAST to make a videocd.
