Compound clips-Transition Errors
Posted by Ted Irving on December 15, 2011 at 2:55 amNeed some help with transitions on compound clips. I have a video with two layers. An animation on the first, lower layer, and a .png graphic. I have made the second layer .png a compound clip because I want it to appear above layer 1 via a wipe. However, anytime I add a wipe, the layer below becomes black. Very frustrating. Even after rendering, the first layer is gone. If I remove the transition from the second layer, the bottom layer is visible. Do I have to compound the entire video & all it’s layers?

December 15, 2011 at 4:14 amIf you add the transition to the png only?
You can always key frame the trim controls as well.

December 15, 2011 at 5:17 amTed – just tried to reproduce this – video on primary storyline, two layers of compound clips with pngs. Added wipes and it is playing back as expected.
Therefore maybe it is something on your system. Trash the prefs and see if you get the same results. Also to creating a new project. Maybe try using psd instead of png.
Let us know how that goes.

December 15, 2011 at 9:22 amQuick question: Is the wipe transition you applied inside the compound or outside?
Also, if inside, right-click the transition and make sure that “Transition to/from Black” is unchecked (it will be on by default).

December 15, 2011 at 3:32 pmThanks for the help everyone. I totally missed/overlooked the right click option. Great info. Prior to relieving this info I turned each layer into a storyline, applied the transitions and it worked. But that is too many steps. I’ll make sure and right click and use the “Transition to/from Black” function. It’s becoming easier and easier to use this program. Thanks again.

December 15, 2011 at 5:40 pmAndy – looks like the “Transition to/from Black” isn’t even in the FCP X help. That is a great find.
It looks it is only able to be modified on a primary storyline. Is that what you have found also?

December 15, 2011 at 9:02 pmI found that even on the primary timeline the “Transition to/from Black” is greyed out for some reason. And this might be because of the type of transition, which is a custom design from Freebie FX.

January 17, 2012 at 6:21 pmRobert, your situation is different. You’re transition is applied to a secondary storyline. Storylines do not composite with layers below; only connected and compound clips.
For you, you have a couple of options. Raise the previous clip into the secondary storyline so that the transition will work properly, or drop the clip with the transition into the primary storyline for the same effect.
If however, the connected clip is also compositing with the layer below, then you must create a compound clip from the connected clip, open it up in Timeline Mode and apply the transition there, making sure that the Transition to/from black is unchecked.
I can’t tell from your image what you’re trying to do in your sequence, so I gave you all three possiblities.

January 18, 2012 at 8:28 pmwow that works.
unfortunately not all affects can be treated as such.
I’m trying to used cropped video for a lower third and some transitions are only meant for full screen video.thank you for the work around. hopefully apple will realize this and find a “simple” solution for it.
