Compositing & tracking 3D buildings in video in AE?
Hello,
This is my first post here so my apologies if it is in the wrong forum.
I would advice or be directed to a tutorial that will show me how to
take multiple 3D house designs (perhaps from Sketchup) and composite
them in a video to make it look like they are situated on the side of a
hill.The video is an aerial video: https://vimeo.com/65948083
Can this be done in AE CS6? If not, what software would anyone

My workflow would be to camera track in AE, export the camera data into C4D, build the model and render that back to AE. I don’t use Element 3D from VideoCoPilot, but that might be another workflow to explore. VCP has a ton of tutorials on how to use it.
Check out this video from NAB about the new integration between C4D and AE. Skip to 22:46, he does something very similar to what you are trying to do.

Thanks so much, Johnny. This is what I was looking for.
Would the 3d models have to be modeled in C4D or could they come from other sources, for example Sketchup or other architectural software? The houses would be designed by people other than me.

in the first cut, there is a little warping, this could be hard to track!
Maybe you need to get rid of that, to get a decent track…
Also the fact that you use a fireye-lens (i asume a GoPro).
This could realy be a chalange!The workflow would be:
Track the Clips (take a look at “Camera Tracker” from “The Foundry” third party AE plugin)
Make or Have a Model of the building (Blender, C4D, i don´t know about Sketchup!)
Bring it into AE or bring the trackingdata into the 3D program!
(at this point i would use Element 3D, becouse its inside of AE and The Foundry is in AE, so you stay in one App! and in my mind this is a good thing!)
Place the Model in the szeen.
ColorCorrect.

Thank you Stephan. Yes, you are correct about the jello. I mistakenly left my GoPro at 30fps. At 60fps I didn’t have this trouble. In other vids. I can also flatten the clips with Optical Compensation but it degrades the quality somewhat so I left this video as is.
Thanks also for the workflow. I will play around and see if I can figure it all out. It’s a huge help.

In the new AE, to do it like they did in the video, you’d have to use C4D at some point. But you can bring in models from other sources into C4D. And the next version of AE,CC7, = will come bundled with Cinema4d Lite, so that’s something to think about.
Again, I’m not familiar with Element 3d, but just reading from the front page it says it supports obj files. So if you can save out from sketchup an obj that might be the way you want to go. And unlike C4D/AE combo, Element renders really fast.
