    Hi,

I’m editing a short film in Premiere Pro 1.5, and need a bit of help
on a compositing issue. I’m trying to take one shot, scale it and
composite in the background of another, as a guy remembers something
    that happened to him earlier.

Scaling etc is all good, no problems there, obviously. However, what
I want to do is change the shape of the composited area from the usual
(720×576 in this case) to a round or oval shape with feathered edges
whilst still keeping the subject of the memory visible and recognisable.

Try as I might, I can’t get this to happen. I’m thinking an iris
effect may do it, but can’t get it to work the way I want it to.

Can anyone give me any pointers on how to create this (very easy, I’m
sure, but I can’t see the wood for the trees at the moment!) effect?

    cheers,

    J . . .

Start with a background in V1 (video or still). Next put your video in V2.
In Photoshop make a graphic with a pure black (0,0,0) background. New layer; marquee tool with a 30 pixel feather, create a round or oval selection and fill with pure white (255,255,255). Export as .gif and put in V3 of Premiere.
Apply the Track Matte effect to V2, targeting V3 as the source and Luma as the key type. Might need to select “reverse” in the effect controls.

might also need to make the track matte a separate sequence – it never works for me on the main timeline.

Thanks so much to you both for the help. I’m getting the sequence ever more effective as a result.
