  • Compositing in FCP… I know, I know…

First: I know I should be using AE or Motion. If I could, I would.

So I am creating a slideshow with multiple multi-layer PSDS in FCP. I am animating pretty much every layer of every image in the sequence, and am encountering some SEVERE problems.

It seems that images will arbitrarily stop letting me adjust their duration, in addition to not letting me add transitions after I have all the keyframing inside the psd done. I already changed my user pref for still to 1 minute.

Example: I put the psd on the timeline, blade it down to size, apply basic motion graphics to PSD. I then open the psd in the viewer to animate the individual layers seperately, so I blade down the “clips” to the approximate length that the psd clip is on the main timeline.

I then try to drop a transition between two of these psds, after animating all the layers. the transition will only take up one frame. It will not let me drag the transition length out. Then I try to change the duration of the PSD, figureing it has something to do with no having enough handle, and it will not let me change it at all.

Am I missing something? I know this is a terrible way to go about doing this, but its my only option at this point.

    Thanks for any/all help guys!

    Good Day

When you are trying to adjust the PSD duration, are you adjusting the duration of the individual layers of the PSD or the PSD nest that you are cutting into you master timeline?

If that is the case, hold down option in you r master timeline and double click the nest to open it in the viewer. After this adjust the duration in the upper left hand corner of the viewer.

this may not work, because you have the PSD’s in the timeline with in and out points (this may be your current hang up) if that is the case, just move the nest to a layer without any content and make there duration arbitrarily long.

For the future, when you bring your PSD’s into FCP, before you do anything, change the duration in the browser’s duration column.

I tried adjusting the nested psd. I tried adjusting the layers, then the nest.

I tried making the still image import duration 60 seconds and then just cutting off the excess before I even started animating, but then when I need to make minor changes ie;make one psd nest 2 seconds longer, it will not let me change the duration at all.

I tried bringing the nest to the blank track above, and changing the nests duration in the viewer and it still behaved the same, not accepting in duration change.

    Hmm
