I am working on a project in after effects 6.0. I am creating a section of city using 3D layers. Some of the skyscrapers have video screens wraped around them and the cammera will be flying in and out of the buildings. I have had to precomp the screens (i am aplying 3D trapcode shine to them) so i am left with having to put the buildings in one comp, the screens in another and placing them together in another. As you can imagine either the buildings are going to be on top of the screens in this final comp or vice versa.

This is where my knowledge ends and where i hope yours will be able to take over! Will i have to composit the video screens over the buildings with an Alpha channel? If so how do i go about doing this? Do i have to or is it easier to use another technique? If so how do i go about doing that? Should i give up now and go find a girlfriend?

Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Adam

go find a girlfriend, the gf option has more short term rewards (haha)…

but if you’re gonna do the video (for some reason it’s the option i’d choose, but my personal life is another story), i’d say make the walls of your buidling in a 2d comp with the video, then bring the walls into a new comp, make them into 3d buildings, and fly the camera through…this will eliminate some headache later with what is where in 3d space…if it is supposed to be on the same plane, make it into the same comp…

    hope that helps

Cheers Ben, I do need to create the walls of the buildings and the screens on different comps as i am adding trapcode shine to the screens (3D, using null and adjustment layers), also the screens are going to be slightly offset from the buildings. Really apreciate the help though.

Can anyone tell me how to use the alpha from a comp to mask transparency in another? Ben? Anyone?

you can mask things with an alpha by setting the layer that is doing the masking to be a alpha track matte…i’m still not sure exactly how these screens are being composited into your buildings…

Heres what i am thinking (deep breath), i place all of the screens and the buildings as 3D layers in their position in one comp, create all of the camera moves, i then cut and paste all of the screens and camera moves in to another comp, apply the shine, bring in two of the building comps and make one of them in to an alpha track matte.

Do you think that will work?
