  • Composing for jumbotron type screens, 1st timer needs any/all suggestions

I have a PSA to create in 48 hours for display on a giant screen at a car race track. The spot is all-text, just flying in lines of type. I don’t have any information about the screen, it’s likely it’s color, but not 100 percent certain. I don’t know if it’s LED or something else, or even the screen proportions. I’m to deliver the finished spot on beta SP.

I’m not likely to get any further info in time to help, what I’m looking for here are any hints or tips for making a type-centric motion video spot work in broad, glaring daylight on what for sake of argument we will call a color LED type jumbo-screen. Client has no experience in this either, asked for black type on a “medium blue” background, whatever that means. I’m thinking for best daylight/noon glare readability, you’d want white or yellow type over black or dark blue. But I don’t go to stadiums, and have very little experience seeing these displays.

    Anything? I’m desperate here. Thanks.

My suggestion would be that you use white on black with a big bold font. Yellow on blue also works well.

My suggestion is take no prisoners. Make several tapes with various combinations of font type and colours and use what works best after screening them on the actual display. Nothing worse than a bunch of text that can not be read by those it is intended for. I am in favour personaly of white text on royal blue background. When in doubt this has always come through in the clutch.
