  • Composer 12.0.8 Hangs on boot

Hi folks. A little while ago I upgraded to 12.0.8. When I did Windows 2000 hangs on boot at the “log on screen” –screen freezes before I can enter password or click OK.

The system boots fine if I uninstall Composer, or turn off scsi devices. At first, it would boot ocassionally, but now predictably hangs at this point. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Composer a few times as well as uninstalling other programs.

My thoughts fly to the order devices & services are started up and that there might be a conflict, but I haven’t been able to figure out how to see or change these. Anyone? Anyone?

    Thanks. John

Probably the Avid startup service [Admin Tools -> Services] is causing it. Or another startup in conjunction with Avid startup.

If you are not using Avid drives you can disble that service. If you do have Avid drives, I would try disabling startup functions like anit virus and such.

Thanks. I’ve rolled back to 12.0 and things work fine. I’d like the benefits of ver 12.0.8 though so I’d lik to figure this out. I have 1 AVID drive tower and 2 Media drive sets.

We have the exact same problem with our Media Composer 9000 on Win2000. We just deal with the fact that we have to start it up twice to three times each morning… kinda like our old production van.

Just guessing here (because I’m a conspiracy theorist, and our chief engineer thinks I’m crazy) but I believe it’s due to our media drives and their cables having just passed the 5-yesr old mark. Perhaps the CPU can’t ID everything before startup?

I dunno. That’s what the Magic 8-ball is for.

Wow. That’s what I used to do but then it became very predictable, and insted of booting after 2-3 tries I’ve spent entire mornings and it still hung. Good to know that I’m not alone–conspiracies are always better if you’ve got someone to share them with!

Well, let me know if you guys do something different and it works.
