April 22, 2006 at 2:59 pmDo you meen to roto out hair from a shot or to create the shape of hair from scratch?
If it’s to create the shape, it’s probably best done in Illustrator because of all of it’s tools.
If you’re trying to roto out hair, I wouldn’t bother unless it’s clumpy or rounded. It’s best to look at the individual color channels of the image and see which has the highest contrast to the BG video around the hair. Crush this with levels and use it as a matte to isolate the hair form the image. You will probably have to do this in a few layers to get it all clean.

April 24, 2006 at 1:39 amThat’s what I’m saying, I wouldn’t use masks (roto) because fine hairs are about impossible. Use luma mattes instead. Generate a luma matte either by trying a luma key or more what’s more flexible is using the channel tools to look at each of the 3 color channels and fine the one with the highest contrast from the hair to the BG. Use Levels to crush these levels into a good matte to use as a luma matte to try and isolate the hair.

April 24, 2006 at 6:03 amOuch. I see what you mean. My technique usually works well when it’s hair against blur sky or the like. I hate to say it, but I would be amazed if you ever got a decent matte from that. I think the best you can do is a rough roto but the hair will probably look “helmet” like.
