Compiling many different video types
I have been asked to create a menu driven video? To be played back on a super large monitor at trade shows. The source content is many different types (mp4 – 30fps), (wmv-29.97fps+audio), (mov-24.00fps+audio), (m4v-29.97fps+audio), (avi – 30fps), (avi – 15fps) and Jpg images 800×600. I question this can be done with so many different file types? I have CS5 Master collection and have only done one DVD with Encore and that was 2 years ago. How should this be approached or should I turn and run!

First thing is first, what is your delivery format? That pretty much dictates how you’ll deal with mixed footage.
The second option, and less ideal, is to edit in the format of your highest quality video and then conform to delivered files from there.
I would make a point of telling your client that you cant guarantee 100% quality… sounds like they’re digging into archived material or stock footage of mixed quality. Let them know the trade offs of letterboxing vs scaling some of the smaller clips and so on. A client who knows the issues up front thinks you’re well prepared, tell them too far in and it makes you sound like you’re covering your butt.

I will meet with them and get more answers plus explain the issues with the mixed bag. I do know they want it to be menu driven like DVD. Is that possible with out the DVD?

Who interacts with the menu? The customers or the guy running the display? Do you want the menu visible on screen or do your clients want some kind of control software?
Beyonnd DVD, there is Bluray of course, or software made specifically for live video control (that’s a bit of a blindspot for me so I don’t have a strong recommendation).

They plan to use it in a trade show booth. It would loop play until someone picks up the remote and changed to another menu/chapter. So far the only spec on their new “Trade Show Display” is that it is a monitor and not a flat screen TV.
