A customer has had difficulty playing the DVDs I create even though I test them on everything from a cheap supermarket player to a BluRay machine. Her player is 4 years old. I have sent her a head-cleaning disc – to no avail.

I’d be grateful for any thoughts you may have about making a disc as compatible as possible.

I use PAL rather than HTSC, by the way.

If the laser diode in the player is weak, the player will have difficulty playing burned DVDs. This issue is usually the problem when a DVD player has difficulty playing all burned DVDs, but it will play all replicated DVDs without any problem.

I have seen laser diodes go weak in players as little as six months old.
