Say I have a bunch of tapes and I capture spots off of each of them, lay them down in a timeline and make a master comp tape. Now if I made an edl and gave it to someone so that they could capture the spots it would ask them to pop in the original tapes. How would I make an EDL that would reflect the reel name and timecodes off the new comp tape? I want to make a comp tape and give it to another editor with an edl which would allow him to capture the spots off the one tape. I know this can be done…I’m just having a brain fart.

    Thanks for you help,
    Eli

recapture the comp tape capturing each spot separately… put them back in a sequence, and export the EDL of that sequence.

Thanks for the quick response. Bummer…this is the easiest way? It is a very long tape.

Just wondering: Why would you want to do that?

I am leaving my current job, so they are having the new company montage cut out of house and we have tons of master tapes, so we just want to send up one long digibeta to the editor who is going to cut it. I work on FCP and he works on Avid and he requested a digibeta.

Yeah, other than just logging it for him? ie. no real EDL but at least a starting log… You could get the log from the sequence if it matches the timecode of the recording…?

Another way is to find out what file format the Avid editor can use, then export the individual clips from the FCP project.

Send the clips on a bunch of DVD’s or on a portable Firewire drive.

The editor can then simply drag/drop the exported clips.

Old fashioned EDL management software like Shotlister would enable you to log the new digi beta tape, creating an EDL of the new tape.

We’ve come a long way since then … some of it in reverse …

I still have Shotlister running on PC’s in each studio. Very handy.
