Comp Size Question
Posted by Matt Rinaldo on March 9, 2009 at 3:31 pmUsually to make a comp match the setting of my video I drag a quicktime onto the little composition icon at the bottom of the project bin. It normally works fine, but now when I drag video that was shot in DVCPro HD 720p 23.98 fps the comp that is made is 4:3. I cant figure out why the comp is not 16:9?

March 9, 2009 at 3:59 pmdvcprohd 720, is actually 4:3, with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.33. it just like dv is 720×480 (which is a 3:2 ratio) with a par of .9 which makes the image appear 4:3 on tv.
to see the comp in 16×9, you can either hit the pixel aspect ratio correction button at the bottom of the preview window (looks like a rectangle with an arrow above it), or change the comp settings to 1280×720, square pixel (ae will handle the par correction from the footage to the comp).
if you don’t care much for ae’s choppy par correction, you can download throttle 1.2. which is a gui script for ae that allows you to, among other things, enable high quality par correction from a panel in ae (otherwise you will need to hack the pref file with a text editor).

March 9, 2009 at 4:31 pmThanks a lot for your and Dave LaRonde’s help. By clicking the pixel aspect correction bottom I can view the footage in 16:9.
I had no idea that DVCPro 720p is actually 4:3. I going to download Throttle 1.2 and give that a try and see what looks best. Once I download Throttle, should I put it in the After Effects Scripts folder?
Also for this project I am combining footage that was shoot in DVCPro 720p and 1080p (which Final Cut Pro is calling the 1080p footage Apple Pro Res 422)
In your opinion what is the best way to combine both of these formats?

basically… it will need to go into a folder called “ScriptUI Panels” in the scripts folder. that folder may already exit, or you may need to create it.
as far as mixing footage… you said 720p and 1080p… are they the same frame rate? 720p is typically 60p (59.94 fps), 1080p is typically 24p (23.976 fps)… but they could both be 24p, which would be ideal….
how to go about mixing the two will depend a lot on what the frame rates are….
