communication breakdown
I can’t seem to get my frigging deck to communicate with my double frigging computer!
I am flummoxed. Especially because the other day it worked just fine, thankyouverymuch — I created a project, did a batch “capture now”, and FCP 6.06 automatically broke the tape into clips with each new start/stop of the camera, and there they were for me to use, no problem.
Then today when I went to create a sequence by dragging a clip into the timeline, I got a dialogue box that said (I think) something like: my clips didn’t match my sequence settings, did I want to change it, and I clicked yes, and everything worked just fine, as far as creating the sequence was concerned.
So, I then moved on to import a new tape/reel, and the dialogue that comes up now says:
Unable to initialize Capture Device
Device is not connected or the capture preset is not
setup correctly. You may still log offline clips.This might also happen if you play DV footage in an
HDV deviceWell, the device is in fact connected (just like it was two days ago, nothing changed), and I didn’t change any settings, except the one I mentioned above when creating the sequence (???). So I opened the audio/video pull down menu: the Sequence Preset is HDV – 1080i60, the Capture Preset is HDV, the Device Control Preset is Sony HDV Firewire — as far as I can tell all is as it should be.
I tried using a different device, i.e. my camera, instead of the deck — same problem. I then tested the connection with iMovie, no problem at all, was able to import just fine.
Any idea what I’m doing wrong, and/or how to fix this? Many thanks.

Have you tried restarting your computer?

Ken, mystery solved — I switched settings on the easy set-up (again), and again when I quit FCP it prompted me that my project had changed, did I want to save it — previously I had clicked ‘no’ and thus the easy setup changes were nullified…. duh. So this time I clicked ‘yes’, quit and re-launched FCP and voila. Thanks for catalyzing my realization!
