I’m finally taking the plunge to HDV, and this suite will be used primarily for 30 second commercial production with the slight possibility of an occasional 3-5 minute marketing video. I’m going with PC because we already have some software. I’ll be shooting on a Canon XL-H1a and editing with Adobe Premiere CS3. And unfortunately for the moment I’ll still need to output to a BetaSp deck until the stations in my area finish their upgrades.

The only thing I’m not sure of at the moment is a preview monitor…I may just get a cheap LCD from WalMart… but I’m not sure.

Does anyone see anything I missed or screwed up? Are there any conflicts with this hardware setup and BlackMagic that anyone’s aware of? I’m still going through the motherboard manual to insure my memory and processor will be ok…

    Hi.

Can not your software dealer give you nice software platform change rate to swap to mac?

If you are not tech wiz it will nor be eazy for you to make it work.
Some parts might not work at all in your workflow ASUS video board for instance. Then you have to throw it away and get new one.

I have built some of my edit machines myselft but it does not mean that all the time everything work out of the box. Usually IT worker in your company does not have a clue what is going on and you have to work it out yourself. If no prior experience then it gives nice bad taste in your mouth for a while.

I’d say go with BM certified system if pc or get mac pro. You also might consider getting bigger screen or even two. Big screen with reasonable rez will probably speed up your work a lot as you do not have to open and close windows all the time.

Well unfortunately BM has not updated their Hardware/Turnkey lists in quite a while so there isn’t much to go on there. Although I can comfortably edit on either a PC or MAC enviroment, I prefer PC due to certain other requirements within my company. I’ve also built several edit suites in the past and am aware that they can be a pain… but then again I’ve also worked on Turnkey systems that also have their fair share of problems. The main point of my post was to see if anyone else had possibly used any of the hardware I listed and ran into any problems. And I was hoping to get a little advice on an HDV suite since this is my first attempt at one. Thanks for the advice on the monitors.. I’ll definitely add a second one to the build.

    Hi.

For motherboard and video i’d go with “safe bet” trying to see what chip sets and video have worked and go from there.

If you have no stress for testing stuff out and making some R & D
then i see no problem going this way.

    For displays i’d go with 24″ dual Dell 2407 (2408) 1920*1200 pixels.
Rez is really important as 20″ 1024*768 will not help you much.
